『토지』를 활용한 국내출생 이주배경 청소년의 자아 정체성 교육

초록

This study investigated the educational utility of Park Kyung-ri’s novel Toji (The Land) as a text for the establishment of positive self-identity among domestic-born youth with migrant backgrounds. To this end, the study analyzed the lineage-related conflicts and the processes of overcoming them experienced by the third and fourth-generation characters in the latter part of the novel, in conjunction with the identity struggles of youth with migrant backgrounds. The results confirmed that the core of identity formation lies in the subject’s active attitude and interpretive ability rather than in the external environment. Furthermore, through the case of Shoji, it was identified that ‘care’ transcending blood ties and social networks are key drivers in establishing identity. This demonstrates that teachers and community mentors must go beyond being mere transmitters of knowledge to become social safety nets and practical supporters for these youths. Therefore, this paper argues for the necessity of redefining youth with migrant backgrounds not as objects of deficiency, but as active subjects. Moreover, the significance of this study lies in its proposal of practical educational strategies using Toji, enabling these youths to reinterpret their lives through a subjective narrative and establish a healthy self.
