A Study on the Trends of the Spread of the Korean Wave on the Korea-Japan Performance Industry

초록

This study analyzes the structural changes and ripple effects of the Korean Wave on the performance industries of both Korea and Japan amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and digital transformation, based on empirical data. The results are as follows. First, the music industry has emerged as a key export engine for Korea. Notably, Japan accounted for 35.1% of total music exports in 2023, serving as the largest consumer market surpassing North America and Greater China, as well as a stable revenue base. Second, since the pandemic, the Korean performance market has rapidly grown to 1.4 trillion KRW in ticket sales, with popular music driving approximately 52% of total revenue. This growth, fueled by strong fandom purchasing power and large-scale performances, suggests the domestic market has entered a stage of realizing economies of scale. Third, the dominance of the Korean Wave in the Japanese live industry was confirmed. In 2024, approximately 62% (5.79 million) of the audience for foreign artist performances in Japan attended concerts by Korean artists. The high average attendance per performance proves that K-POP has settled as a mainstream popular culture in Japan. Fourth, regional analysis reveals a structural difference: while 75% of Korean ticket reservations are concentrated in the metropolitan area, Japan’s concentration is lower at 52%, with developed infrastructure in regional hubs. This highlights the Japanese market as an essential base for Korean artists to generate revenue through nationwide tours. In conclusion, the performance industries of Korea and Japan are forming a complementary relationship of co-growth. Thus, both countries should strengthen cooperative partnerships. Korea specifically needs to expand large-scale infrastructure and establish sophisticated strategies viewing Japan as a second domestic market. This study is significant for proving the industrial value of the Korean Wave with objective data and deriving policy implications for sustainable development.
