A Study on the Metal Crafts excavated from Ingaksa Temple

초록

The metal artefacts recovered from the Ingaksa excavations are not numerous, but they cover a wide range of time periods, from the Unified Silla period to the Goryeo period. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the metal artefacts excavated at Ingaksa. The metal crafts excavated from Ingaksa Temple were mainly excavated during the 4th, 5th, and 6th excavations. Bronze mirrors were were unearthed in the 4th excavation, and Seon Buddhist offerings, Buddhist instruments and household utensils were unearthed in the 5th excavation. Chopsticks thought to be incense tools, were unearthed in the 6th excavation. The most important metal crafts unearthed at Ingaksa Temple are the Unified Silla period metal crafts unearthed during the 5th excavation. The metal crafts unearthed during the 5th excavation, such as gilt-bronze incense burner with handle, bronze incense container, and a bronze Kundika, are similar to those of unearthed at the Monk stupa of Shenhui who is the 7th Seon master of the Chinese Seon Order. It is important in that the transmission of offering vessel of Seon Order during the Unified Silla period is related to the Chinese Southern School of Seon Buddhism. The bronze mirror excavated in the 4th excavation is a small mirror excavated from the building site, and is presumed to be around the 11th century. The bronze gong from the 5th excavation was used as an external container for burial artifacts, but it is significant in that it is the oldest Buddhist gong from the Unified Silla period. The wind bell was excavated from a building site, and its trapezoidal shape suggests that it dates from the early Goryeo period. The metal crafts from Ingaksa Temple are centred on the metal crafts from the 5th excavation of the Unified Silla period. Although the burial period is unknown, it does not include metal crafts of Goryeo period, suggesting that the burial period is different from other Goryeo burial artefacts, which are believed to have been buried during the Mongol invasion.
