The Reality and Representation of Child Prostitution in the Movie <Holly>

초록

This study examines the representation of child prostitution and sexual exploitation in Southeast Asia as depicted in the film <Holly>. Employing the theory of representation as its primary theoretical framework, the analysis focuses on how structural violence—such as poverty, human trafficking, and prostitution—is visualized through the lived experiences of 12-year-old Holly. In particular, the study explores how the film portrays the complex layers of social power relations that shape Holly’s reality, including the sexual objectification of women and children, the commodification of virginity, the collusion of institutional authorities, and the familial structures that sustain sexual commercialization. The film is thus interpreted as a representational medium that not only reflects reality but also fosters ethical awareness regarding sexual exploitation. Furthermore, the analysis critiques the ethical limitations inherent in the white male savior narrative centered on the character Patrick, while also recognizing the film’s attempt to transcend this narrative through Holly’s gradual assertion of subjectivity. Ultimately, <Holly> offers meaningful insights for rethinking sexual exploitation and human rights discourse from a more ethically grounded and practically engaged perspective.
