The Effects of Veracity and Communication Modalities on Verbal Strategy - A Vignette Survey Comparing Korean and Japanese -

초록

This study examined how cultural background(Korean vs. Japanese), veracity(truth vs. lie), and communication modality(face-to-face vs. over the phone) interact to influence individuals’ intention to use verbal strategies. A total of 240 participants(140 Koreans, 100 Japanese) were randomly assigned to one of the four vignette conditions and instructed to rate their likelihood of using ten different verbal strategies to appear convincing. A 2(Veracity) × 2(Modality) × 2(Ethnicity) between-subjects design was used, with participants completing a web-based survey. Age was included as a covariate in a three-way ANCOVA. The dependent variable was the mean score of intention to use verbal strategies. The results revealed a significant three-way interaction. Among Korean participants, a significant interaction emerged between veracity and communication modality. Specifically, truth-tellers reported significantly higher intention to use verbal strategies over the phone than did liars, whereas no such difference was observed in the face-to-face condition. No such effects were observed among Japanese participants. These findings suggest that strategic verbal behavior is shaped by both cultural and situational factors. Even within high-context cultures, such as Korea and Japan, variation in strategic communication may emerge depending on communication modality and veracity.
