A Study on University Students' Subjective Perceptions of ChatGPT Usage

초록

This study aims to categorize and analyze the subjective perceptions of university students regarding the use of ChatGPT as an educational tool. To explore these subjective viewpoints, the Q-methodology was employed. For the Q-sample, 40 final statements were selected through an extensive literature review on ChatGPT, in-depth interviews with college students, and online surveys. A total of 39 participants (P-sample) were involved in the study. The analysis revealed four distinct types of perceptions: Type 1 (n=20), ‘Proactive Self-Directed Users’, Type 2 (n=7), ‘Cautious Information Verifiers’, Type 3 (n=8), ‘Convenience-Oriented Functional Users’, and Type 4 (n=4), ‘Exploratory Early Beginners’. The findings indicate that, with the exception of Type 2, which exhibited somewhat conservative and defensive characteristics, the remaining three types generally demonstrated positive perceptions of ChatGPT. This study is significant as a foundational step toward exploring ways to ensure that university students use artificial intelligence, represented by ChatGPT, ethically and effectively without adverse effects in the field of education.
