Anthropomorphism of AI Agents in Chatbot-Mediated Learning: Mediating Effect of English Learning Motivation and Satisfaction, and the Moderating Effect of Gender

초록

This paper explored how the anthropomorphism of artificial intelligence agents, specifically chatbots used in chatbot-mediated learning (CML), can affect learners and their learning experiences. To this end, data were collected and analyzed from 151 students (mean age = 11.05 years, S.D. = 1.66, 58% male) who had experience learning English through free conversation with chatbots designed as non-player characters (NPCs) on a metaverse platform. The results showed that the users' perception of anthropomorphism in CML had a mediating effect on learning motivation and learning satisfaction. Additionally, a significant gender moderation effect was found in the relationship between learning motivation and anthropomorphism. Specifically, male students with a higher motivation for learning showed a greater tendency to anthropomorphize chatbots compared to female students, and the perception of anthropomorphism was positively associated with the level of learning satisfaction These findings suggest that gender differences may influence the effects of anthropomorphism in AI agents and highlight the need for further empirical verification of anthropomorphism effects in the design of CML.
