AI 시 번역, 어디까지 가능한가-『날개 환상통』번역 비교·분석을 중심으로

초록

This study selected several poems from Phantom Pain Wings, a poetry collection by Kim Hyesoon, a poet well known for her experimental poetry, and compared the translations produced by a human translator and ChatGPT. The focus of the comparison and analysis was on sections that posed particular challenges for the human translator, examining how ChatGPT could be utilized to address the difficulties of poetry translation. The major challenges in poetry translation can be broadly categorized into two aspects: conveying the rhythm of poetic language in translation and appropriately resolving the ambiguity inherent in poetry. Based on the analysis conducted in this study, the translations generated by ChatGPT not only preserved the rhythm of the original text but also effectively conveyed the imagery that the original sought to present through its characters. Additionally, ChatGPT sometimes engaged in activist translation, emphasizing the social implications of the original text more strongly. Of course, the poetry translations produced by ChatGPT still contain numerous errors. However, this study aims to suggest the possibility that AI can serve as an IA(Intelligence Amplification) tool that enhances human capabilities, functioning as a cognitive and creative assistant for human translators.
