This study seeks to move beyond the conventional understanding of youth social isolation and withdrawal as a mere absence of interpersonal relationships. It aims to identify latent subgroups of socially isolated and withdrawn youth based on multidimensional life conditions and examine how variations in individual and social perceptions relate to these groups. Utilizing data from the 2022 Korean Youth Life Survey, the analysis focused on 1,300 socially isolated and withdrawn individuals drawn from a nationally representative sample of 14,966 youth. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was employed to delineate heterogeneous subgroups, and multinomial logistic regression was conducted to assess the associations between subgroup membership and individual-level factors (life satisfaction, subjective health) as well as social-level factors (social trust, perceptions of inherited wealth). Sampling weights were applied, and the three-step approach was adopted to enhance classification accuracy and minimize potential bias. The LCA results identified three distinct subgroups: the independent–low-income type, the health–emotional vulnerability type, and the family cohabitation type. These findings indicate that youth isolation cannot be attributed to a singular vulnerability but instead represents a structural phenomenon emerging from the intersection of economic, health, and residential inequalities. Regression results further revealed that both individual and social perceptions serve as key determinants differentiating these latent subgroups. Overall, the study conceptualizes youth social isolation as a multidimensional socio-psychological process shaped by the interplay between material conditions and perceptual frameworks, offering empirical evidence and policy implications for the development of type-specific interventions and structural strategies to restore social trust among isolated youth.
