How Social Isolation Affects Depression : Focusing on the Frequency according to the Means of Contact

초록

After COVID-19, our society has started to focus on social isolation across all age groups and the resulting depressive symptoms. This study defines social isolation as the frequency of contact with people around and explores the factors affecting this variable. To verify the research questions, the study utilized the "Survey on Perception of Loneliness among Busan Citizens" conducted by the Busan Women and Family Development Institute in 2020. Using this data, the sample was divided into two groups: those in their 20s-40s and those aged 50 and above. Correlation analysis was conducted on the frequency of contact through KakaoTalk, phone calls, and face-to-face interactions with depression in each group. Additionally, hierarchical regression analysis was performed to verify the relative importance of these contact methods on depression. The results showed that for those in their 20s-40s, all three contact methods had a negative correlation with depression, though not statistically significant. However, for those aged 50 and above, all three contact methods had a significant negative correlation with depression, with phone call frequency having the greatest impact on depression. These findings discuss the importance of non-face-to-face contact in our country in the future, and various policies were suggested, such as the universalization of non-face-to-face contact services and usage education for vulnerable groups.
