듀이의 교호작용 개념에 대한 베넷(J. Bennett)의 신(新)유물론적 해석 검토

초록

This study examines Jane Bennett’s interpretation of John Dewey’s concept of transaction from the perspective of new materialism, situating her approach within Dewey’s philosophy. Dewey’s concept of transaction describes an integrative, relational process in which humans and their environments mutually transform and constitute each other. This idea is central to his anti-dualistic philosophy, which challenges the limitations of traditional philosophical dualism. As a new materialist, Bennett regards matter as an active agent and understands the world as a dynamic network involving both humans and nonhumans. She uses Dewey’s concept of transaction to reconceptualize the political participation of nonhuman entities. This study finds that Bennett’s interpretation is consistent with Dewey’s anti-dualistic position, his focus on process, and his emphasis on affect. Dewey’s concept of transaction is closely related to new materialist approaches, which suggest ways to expand educational practices beyond an anthropocentric framework to include ecological and complex events involving nonhuman actors. However, this interpretation also highlights the anthropocentric tendencies that remain in Dewey’s educational philosophy and reveals its ambiguous aspects. This study demonstrates that connecting Dewey’s educational philosophy with new materialism offers new insights. Considering the potential for dialogue between philosophies, this reinterpretation supports both the reexamination of established ideas and the broadening of the theoretical scope of educational studies. In today’s rapidly changing world, where learners and environments, theory and practice, and ends and means are intricately entangled, the encounter between Dewey and new materialism provides a significant philosophical resource for exploring changes in the concept of education.
