Open World Video Games Seen Through the Narrative Film Structure - A Case Study of The Legend of Zelda Series

초록

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a video game released in 2017 and it is the first open world game in the series. Analyzing the game's narrative based on the narrative film structure shows the differences that lead to the game's weaknesses. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel released six years later and the improved narrative has more in common with the narrative film structure. The game utilizes a sense of autonomy and interaction, the two core traits of open world genre, to supplement the narrative. Because films rely on narrative probability, it is difficult for them to have a sense of autonomy. However, enhancing the antagonist's plot can lead to a stronger sense of immersion.
