원효찬(元曉撰) 『대승기신론별기』와 색부찬(塞部撰) 『대승기신론사기』 -현행본 『대승기신론별기』의 성격 재검토-

Wŏnhyo’s Special Exposition is known as the earliest among his writings on the ‘Awakening of Faith.’ But it is suspicious that the Special Exposition was really written by Wŏnhyo himself, because the onnotation of the word of ‘(Arising) according to the circumstances’ (隨緣) in it is clearly different from his Commentary on the ‘Awakening of Faith.’ While the word of ‘(Arising) according to the circumstances’ connote the Thusness/Tathāgatagarbha(如來藏)’s combining with the Darkness(Non-brightness) and the exposure of appearing/birth and distinction/death of Being in the Special Exposition, the same word means just following the circumstances of things in the Commentary. Also there are some odd inverted sentences in the Special Exposition. So in this article we will examine whether present text of the Special Exposition can be identical with the original Wŏnhyo wrote or a changed one written by later people. We can find several records on the Special Exposition and the Commentary in the old documents on the transcription of Buddhist scriptures in Japanese Nara-period. The records show the Commentary was consisted of twice as many pages as the Special Exposition; 61 to 32 or 75 to 38 or 104 to 51. But the ratio is different from the number of the Chinese characters of the writings. The numbers of the characters are 34,894(the Commentary) and 20,222(the Special Exposition), and the ratio is 1.75 to 1. According to the style of Nara-period transcription, the number of the pages consists with the volume of the Commentary, while that of the Special Exposition cannot cover the volume of it. Present text of the Special Exposition has about 2,500 characters more than the Nara-period text. Besides the special usage of the word of Su-yŏn(隨 緣), there are some other suspicious expressions in the Special Exposition, which Wŏnhyo cannot have used. They are the 1)referring of the Gate of Suchness and the Gate of Appearing and Distinction - two Gates of One Mind – to the Gate of Non Shape, 2)the Gate of Combining with Darkness(Non-brightness), the inconsistency in the use of the term for Alāya-consciousness and 3)the confused quotation from the Non-increase and Non-decrease Sutra. These suspicious expressions show that the present text of cannot be the same with original. We find important comments on this matter in Japanese monk Encho’s note in his Catalogue of Buddhist Scriptures of Eastern Country edited in 1094, where he said the Private Exposition composed by Säkbu(塞部) is identical with Wŏnhyo’s Special Exposition. As there’s the record of “Säkbu(塞部)’s Composition(塞部撰)” in the end of the Special Exposition, it is very possible that Säkbu’s Private Exposition must be identical with present Special Exposition. Säkbu’s Private Exposition is thought to have been written as the private record for himself on Wŏnhyo’s Special Exposition, but later it replaced the original.
