From Buddhist Statue Miracle Story to Monstrous Response Tale: Transmission and the Editorial Logic of the "Yaoguai" in the Fayuan Zhulin

초록

This study examines how the Zhang Liang (張亮) narrative was received as a Buddhist statue miracle story in the 《Konjaku Monogatari-shū》(今昔物語集) and as a monstrous response tale in the 《Fayuan Zhulin》(法苑珠林). And this difference resulted from divergent lines of textual transmission and distinct editorial logics. In the 《Mingbao ji》(冥報記), the narrative presents a Buddha statue saving Zhang Liang from a thunderbolt. The 《Mingbao shiyi》(冥報拾遺), however, adds a later episode in which a mark around the statue’s neck is interpreted as an omen of Zhang Liang’s execution. By adopting this version, the 《Fayuan Zhulin》 places the narrative within the “Yaoguai” section(妖怪篇) and interprets it as an example of karmic retribution. By contrast, the 《Konjaku Monogatari-shū》, following the story in the 《Mingbao ji》, preserves the narrative as a miracle tale centered on the salvific power of the Buddha statue. This comparison shows that the boundary between miracle and monstrosity is not inherent in the narrative itself, but is constructed through source selection, editorial arrangement, and interpretive framework.
