A Study about 4 Access Types of Shopping Mall

초록

This study describes the access types of existing shopping malls, related to their spatial organization, from an ‘open/enclosed’ dichotomous perspective. However, this perspective does not take into account the access types of key tenants or specialty stores as elements in the constitution of the mall. In existing studies, ‘open/enclosed’ design is said to be attributable to a mall’s location, in either suburban areas, or the downtown area itself. However, such existing studies do not adequately explain the aspects of malls relevant to the current design phenomenon. Accordingly, in this thesis malls constructed after Victor Gruen - who is referred to as the inventor of the shopping mall - will be newly defined, subjects of the study determined, and mall access re-classified into 4 types (In․In, Out․In, Out․Out, In․Out) that differ, in respect to the open/enclosed approach. In terms of the research process, the actual facts behind the reasons for the transformation of malls will be investigated, instead of those attributed to the location of the mall, as indicated in existing studies. Based on such a research result, It will provide grounds for study that will interpret rambling activity’s transformation after ‘spreading circulation’ suggested by Victor Gruen.
