A Study on the Mediating Effect of Stress Coping Styles in the Relationship between Job Overload and Burnout among Police Officers

초록

This study empirically examined the effect of job overload on burnout among police officers in Seoul and investigated the mediating roles of stress coping styles— problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, and avoidance-focused coping—in this relationship. Job overload was conceptualized not merely as an increase in workload but as a qualitative intensification of job demands encompassing emotional and cognitive burdens. To measure this construct, the Intensification of Job Demands Scale developed by Kubicek and Korunka (2014) was adapted and applied to the Korean policing context. Survey data collected from 190 police officers were analyzed. The results indicated that job overload had a significant positive effect on burnout. Both problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping partially mediated the relationship between job overload and burnout. In contrast, avoidance-focused coping was positively correlated with job overload but did not exhibit a statistically significant mediating effect. These findings suggest the importance of strengthening adaptive coping strategies while reducing avoidance-oriented responses through psychological interventions and organizational support within police organizations. This study provides policy and practical implications for managing occupational stress and preventing burnout among police officers.
