This study analyzes the relationships between bodies depicted in the film The Apartment with Two Women outside the discourse of motherhood. Although the film portrays a mother–daughter relationship, the relationships among its characters are too complex to be subsumed under the single concept of “motherhood.” Attending both to the presence of multiple characters beyond Sookyung and Lee-jeong and to the ways bodies cannot be separated from the social structures that shape them, this study examines relationships. Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s notion of the lived body designates a singular body that cannot be predetermined by conceptual categories. Actions grounded in one’s lived body intertwine with the lived bodies of others, thereby generating relationships. The relationships in the film depart from homogenizing conceptual frameworks and instead deepen through corporeal actions. The ambivalence of touch—oscillating between intimacy and disgust—is closely tied to these complex relationships. Such tactile ambivalence makes it difficult for Lee-jeong to judge Sookyung’s actions in simple terms. The liquids circulating among Lee-jeong, Sookyung, and Jong-yeol simultaneously evoke intimacy and disgust, further complicating their relationships. Because touch requires direct contact, in contrast to other senses that operate through distance, tactile experience between Sookyung and Lee-jeong repeatedly escalates into violence. Their violent dynamic contains the possibility of mitigation when they create distance and when touch is transformed into other senses. Intercorporality refers to the process through which bodies, by forming relationships, come to share records—such that ruptures in those relationships inevitably leave an impact on the body. Body-schema, which requires repetitive action and spatial habituation, likewise arises from intercorporality. As intercorporality is always situated within social structures, the bodies receive unequal degrees of impact. Sookyung and Sora experience anxiety under Jong-yeol’s influence, while Jong-yeol himself enjoys an inconsistent position. Even within a nominally equal relation such as “coworkers,” Mr. Park and Lee-jeong attribute different degrees of importance to Sohee. These asymmetries extend to issues of gender, enabling figures such as Kyung-seok and Jong-yeol to intervene covertly in the relationships between women and to exert influence over them. Intercorporality includes issues of class, so the words of Lee-jeong and the relationship between Lee-jeong and Sohee that can lead to change are lost by Mr. Park.
