초록

Literary translation is considered as an explanation of the work produced by a translator on the basis of the differences between source languages and target languages and between source cultures and target cultures. A translator is the first reader and acute critic of the literary work to translate. In reality, any translator is not free from various constraints associated with translating literary works. According to André Lefevere, all translation of literature takes place under five constrains. The non- text constraints are patronage, poetics, ideology, and universe of discourse, and the textual constraint is the natural language in which the work is composed. This study aims to examine Lefevere's five constraints, and clarifies the distinctions between the two translated texts from the standpoint of his theory. It also explains which constraints might bring those differences on them and how they affect translation and translators’ strategy. For this study, three short stories included in Where I'm Calling From written by Raymond Carver in 1989 and their two translated texts are subjected to the comparative analysis.
