<August : Osage County> 바바라 역할 창조 연구: 외상 후 스트레스 장애와 앤 보가트 뷰포인트를 중심으로

Tracy Letts's <August : Osage County> deals with the desires and lonely lives through social change and generational conflict which happened to a family. The repetitive events between the characters in this play aggravate isolation of all family members and remind them of the wounds caused by the family environment and the parenting style. As a result, each character is undergoing mental stress and trauma. Thus, this paper aims to analyze Barbara by applying the personality disorder theory. Specifically this paper illustrates how Barbara is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with the type of DSM-5 (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). In consequence, I derived 're-experience', 'avoidance', and 'hypersensitivity' from the characteristics of PTSD. They contributed to the establishment of Barbara's background history with objectivity and an analytic approach to her. In addition, i concluded that the characteristics of PTSD in Barbara can be effectively shown on stage through Anne Bogart's Viewpoint, a physical acting method. Viewpoint acting training helps actors improve their movement and perception of space-time. This not only maximizes physical expression, but also allows actors to act freely on stage in accordance with immediate impulses and reactions. This paper demonstrates 'involuntary re-experience due to repeated trauma' and 'illogical behavior due to accidental events' among Bogart's viewpoints. In conclusion, this study focuses on how post-traumatic stress disorder reflects Barbara's psychology and how her inner conflicts are revealed by physical behavior by utilizing viewpoint. Furthermore, this paper tried to illustrate the reality of the role creation process through the practical production process beyond theoretical research.
