초록

This study extended this researcher’s previous academic work, ‘The Patterns of Expanded Accessibility in Contemporary Inclusive Performance.’ It investigates how the collision between fiction and actuality in contemporary inclusive performance generates threshold states, and how these liminal moments enable aesthetic and relational forms of Mutual-inclusivity. The study first examined the trajectory and limitations of contemporary ‘disability-friendly approaches’ in the arts. Although current accessibility practices have expanded from material accommodations to institutional and legal protections, stigma and structural discrimination surrounding disability remain deeply embedded and are often reproduced. When ‘Accessibility’ is framed as a undirectional structure—from provider to user—it risks positioning users as passive recipients and thus impedes political or epistemic transformation. This highlights the need for artistic practices that expose and reconfigure lived disability experiences(Cripping-up) and reposition inclusivity as a mutual rather than unilateral process. The study identified this potential through key concepts in crip theory—crip time, crip recognition, and crip Kinship. Analyzing the play <Jellyfish>(2025), the research demonstrated how integrated casting and the visibility of care practices produce relational Mutual-inclusivity, as performers’ rhythms, temporalities, and breath influenced one another in real time. Pre-performance ice-breaking, on-stage prompters, and openly positioned access coordinators function as Meta-accessibility devices, generating a linguistic and sensory ‘Mutual-inclusivity.’ These exposed mechanisms operate as a form of aesthetic defamiliarization, destabilizing the boundary between the fictional narrative and the performers’ actual bodies. In doing so, the performance reframed accessibility not as something merely ‘provided,’ but as something co-created among performers, audiences, and the material realities of disability—illustrating a vital, practice-based model of contemporary inclusive performance.
