초록

The main objective of this paper is to explore the distinctive features and underlying meaning of Lee Hyeong-gi’s novel, Sakyamuni; and how the Buddhist worldview extends to other genres. As a result of the study, this paper summarizes the characteristics of the novel Sakyamuni into three main categories. First, through the biography of a person named Shakyamuni, the Four Noble Truths, which are the core of Buddhist doctrine, were emphasized, and Buddhist thought was naturally embodied. Secondly, it specifically symbolized the human aspect of Shakyamuni rather than a god. Thirdly, Buddhism was interpreted from a modern perspective and embodied in the work. It was also confirmed that the Buddhist worldview and thoughts in Lee Hyeong-gi’s literature organically expanded not only to poetry but also to the genre of fiction, revealing genre diversity. It is the first time that Lee Hyeong-gi’s novel, Sakyamuni has been studied academically. This can be said to reveal the characteristics of religious novels that emphasize that the Buddha’s words are not only 2,600 years old, but are useful in today’s modern era, too.
