일제 시대 상업출판의 식민적 자생력 -삼중당서점을 중심으로-

Colonial Self-reliance of Commercial Publishing during the Japanese Colonial Era -Focusing on Samjungdang -

초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the management and survival strategies of Korean publishers by examining the establishment and operation process of ‘Samjungdang Bookstore’ during the colonial period. The modern sense of publishing that Saju Seo Jae-soo acquired under colonial rule has a commercial purpose for profit creation, as well as a logic of competition that echoes Japan's restrictions in the uneven publishing reality of empires and colonies. Seo Jae-su showed cleverness in overcoming the limits of censorship of publications during the Japanese colonial era, and expanded the business of the bookstore with his astute judgment and driving force. In particular, the strategy that can be confirmed through the publication list and copyrights was a planned choice for survival, not a defeat in which the Joseon publishing capital was helplessly crushed. Through the management and publishing activities of Samjungdang Bookstore at the end of Japanese colonial rule, we can discover the potential of modern Korean publishers who sought realistic compromises without trying to put on the guise of nationalist resistance or being excessively pro-Japanese or submissive.
