디지털 이미지 과잉 시대 회화의 저항: 다나 슈츠의 물성과 마크 로스코의 내면성을 중심으로
초록
The contemporary digital environment, characterised by the proliferation of AI-generated images and short-form content, is defined by the instantaneous consumption and volatility of images. In resistance to this accelerated digital flow, this thesis explores the aesthetic value of the materiality and interiority of painting, both of which demand prolonged engagement and contemplation. Through an examination of art history, this research traces the depth of materiality and meditative observation in painting, conceptualising these elements through Dana Schutz’s “vibrant materiality” and Mark Rothko’s “contemplative interiority.” By analysing the works of these two artists through the lens of Susan Sontag’s arguments in Against Interpretation and Hito Steyerl’s concept of the “poor image,” this study investigates the strategies through which painting resists the excesses of digital imagery. Finally, in response to the volatility and overabundance of digital images, this research establishes an analytical framework for the gradual transition from Schutz’s tactile sensibility to Rothko’s meditative contemplation. The significance of this study lies in demonstrating that the delay in viewing time generated through the synthesis of physical materiality and interiority functions as a critical mechanism for overcoming the sensory numbness and image volatility prevalent in the digital age.
