초록
On stage, actors are required not only to deliver accurate pitch and rhythm, but also to convey their character’s emotional state in a natural and convincing manner. However, conventional vocal training has primarily emphasized functional aspects such as breath control, vocal range, and pitch accuracy, while emotional expression has typically been addressed through separate acting training or relied on immersive emotional experiences. Consequently, performers often struggle to integrate vocal technique with emotional expression, resulting in fragmented performances or overly sensory-driven interpretations that lack consistency. Although prior studies have explored the relationship between emotional intelligence and musical expression, or between emotional differentiation and psychological health, few have examined vocal emotional expression training from an integrated, emotion-construction-theory-based framework. This study addresses that gap by proposing a vocal training model that combines Marc Brackett’s RULER-based emotional intelligence theory, the Mood Meter, autonomic nervous system responses, and the function-oriented vocal system of Estill Voice Training. The framework facilitates the integration of emotion and vocal technique through a structured sequence of recognition, differentiation, labeling, expression, and regulation, enabling performers to maintain vocal stability even during deep emotional immersion while articulating diverse affective states with physiological accuracy. By applying mechanisms of emotional intelligence to vocal training, this study presents a novel pedagogical model that bridges the gap between technical voice training and emotional processing. The framework has potential implications for musical theatre and broader music education, offering a structural link between emotional expression training and voice technique development.
