불전문학 속에서의 해난(海難)과 구원(救援) - 자따까(Jātaka)와 아바다나(Avadāna)를 중심으로

As maritime trade activities became active on the ancient Indian subcontinent, exchanges and dissemination of ideas were also actively carried out. Maritime trade has always posed a variety of risks, and the demand for religious services to comfort traders has increased in tandem with the development of maritime trade. Buddhist scriptures contain various stories that reflect this situation. The expectations of those who engage in maritime trade, fears, and various kinds of maritime affairs, as well as the Buddha or disciples saving those in danger, and the donation (dāna) constitute an important Buddhist narrative structure. There are many stories in the jā̄takas and avadānas that richly contain various naval situations of the time, and the analysis of these stories provides a great deal of information for the understanding of early Buddhism or Indian Buddhism. In this paper, the Buddhist meaning or message that the stories intend to convey is analyzed through narrative analysis among Saṅkha-Jātaka, Supparaka Jātaka, Mahajanaka Jātaka, Pūrṇāvadāna and Dharmaruciavadāna.
