초록
This study empirically analyzes the impact of non-interest income on the profitability and risk of Korean banks. Since banks make more efforts to expand non-interest income increase, facing fiercer competition in the banking industry, this study provides important implications in the current situation of the financial industry. In addition, the significance of this study can be found in that there are conflicting views regarding the impact of the expansion of non-interest business on banks' risk. Specifically, this study empirically examines the effects of the non-interest income variables, commission income, foreign currency derivative income, securities income, on the dependent variables such as return on asset, risk-adjusted return on asset, and Z-score, targeting the period from 2010 to 2019 for domestic banks. An important contribution of the study is that it applies the concept of profit, revenue minus cost, instead of the concept of revenue, in relation to non-interest business. As a result of the empirical analysis, it was found that commission income and securities income of domestic banks have a positive effect on the net profit margin, but the effect on the risk-adjusted net profit margin is not clear possibly due to the negative effect on the risk(Z-score). This result that non-interest business increases profitability was derived from additional analysis in which the empirical analysis model was modified or variables were added.
