싱가포르의 지역사회 연계 사회통합 교육사례: 지역개발협의회(CDC)의 활동을 중심으로

This research examines the case of community-based social integration education in Singapore. As a multicultural country, Singapore is composed of various ethnic groups such as Malay, Chinese, and Indian migrants, as well as dozens of ethnic minority communities. Upon its independence, Singapore faced the urgent imperative of forging a common national identity amidst its diverse multicultural populace. To this end, social integration education, fundamentally rooted in multiculturalism, was identified as the most effective national strategy. This educational approach is supported by two main pillars: Charter and Citizenship education in schools and community-based engagement. Community-based activities, by leveraging unique local resources and characteristics, provide organic opportunities for residents to learn about and appreciate their cultural differences. These initiatives are predominantly led by the Community Development Councils (CDCs), which are state-affiliated local administrations. Consequently, this research holistically investigates the characteristics and constraints of the community-based social integration education led by the CDCs in Singapore, offering a final discussion on the key implications.
