Re-examining the Pharyngealization Hypothesis of Old Chinese from the Perspectives of the Kuki-Chin Languages

초록

This study focuses on the hypothesis of pharyngealization in Old Chinese and aims to explore the morphological similarities between the long and short vowel distinctions in Kuki-Chin languages and the derivational functions of pharyngealized versus non-pharyngealized syllables in Old Chinese. Existing research has also compared the long-short vowel distinctions in Kuki-Chin languages with the hypothesis of pharyngealization in Old Chinese, but such studies primarily approach the topic from a phonological perspective, emphasizing comparative analysis of cognates. This paper, however, takes a morphological approach and finds that the derivational patterns in Kuki-Chin languages, where short vowels derive long vowels, align closely with the derivational patterns of pharyngealized syllables in Old Chinese in four key types: deriving action verbs from stative verbs, deriving nouns from nouns, deriving nouns from verbs, and deriving verbs from nouns. Additionally, Old Chinese exhibits a fifth type of derivation, in which results of actions or states are derived, which may represent an apomorphy unique to Old Chinese. This study complements existing research in both methods and conclusions, further suggesting a possible phylogenetic link between Kuki-Chin languages and Old Chinese in terms of morphology.
