A Study on the Situation and Character of Jae(齋) as an Educational Institute in Hwanghae-do in the Joseon Dynasty through Eupji(邑誌)

초록

In this paper, an educational institute with a complex character called 'Jae(齋)' was considered, focusing on the Eupji(邑誌) of Hwanghae-do compiled in the late Joseon Dynasty. According to the findings of this study, there existed a total of sixteen Jae in Hwanghae-do during the Joseon period, including Sahwang-jae in Haeju and Boin-jae in Yeonan. Accordingly, it can be said that Jae was an important educational institute in the educational system of Hwanghae-do. The 16 Jae of Hwanghae-do, which appeared in various Eupji, are largely divided into Yangsa-jae(養士齋), Sasuk(私塾) and Wonsa(院祠). Of the sixteen Jae, eight—such as Sahwang-jae in Haeju and Boin-jae in Yeonan—functioned as Yangsa-jae. In Bongsan, four of the ten Jae—Gyeongmok-jae, Yuye-jae, Bongui-jae, and Ui-jae—were privately organized academies(Sasuk). In the Jangyeon region, Insan-jae and Bangok-jae took the rare form of Wonsa with a memorial shrine for ritual offerings. Gyeongui-jae and Sangseon-jae in Bongsan similarly possessed this Wonsa character. Thus, the sixteen Jae attested in the Eupji of Hwanghae-do exhibited varied institutional forms, including Yangsa-jae, Sasuk, and Wonsa types.
