- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to compare the dialectic of the city and how the modern self might be constituted in Le père Goriot and “Bartleby, the Scrivener: A story of Wall Street” by dealing with the place of Architecture and Urbanism within these texts. In the paper, my key concern is how a new form of finance capitalism combined with a new type of planning vision to produce the prototypical modern city and two novelists were dealing with this issue in their own works. Balzac and Melville portray a number of myths that surrounded Paris and Wall Street during the years leading up to the modernization. I think that they shows the revolution itself did not come out of thin air, but was actually a culminating point of what preceded it. Consequently, I demonstrate the absolute centrality of capital in creating the modern city—its class relations, culture, urban form, and social life.
