| dc.description.abstract | My main goal of this thesis is to reveal the mechanism of human consciousness through William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury and Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Both texts describe how human’s consciousness can be consist of and be transited by exterior influences. The first chapter of The Sound and the Fury describes Benji Compson who is mentally disabled. The chapter shows Benji’s consciousness and the transition mechanism of consciousness by basic stimulations such as sound, touch, smell and taste, etc. The transition mechanism is shown in a very similar way with the characters of Nolan’s Inception, in particular, Dom Cobb who is the protagonist of the film. So I will study the specificities of the mechanism by comparing two texts. One more important thing in my thesis is to study the other mechanism which is about domination of consciousness. The protagonists of both texts are very strongly dominated by the core female figures who are Caddy Compson and Mal Cobb. These two figures become core desire and guilty that can be hardly refused out from the two protagonists’ consciousness. This is the reason why I will study how the two female figures function in the world of Benji and Dom’s consciousness in order to reveal the mechanism of transition and domination of consciousness. | - |
