Abstract
This study examines how perceived relative income shapes individual support for protectionism, with a particular focus on the moderating role of social media. Using individual-level data from the Asian Barometer Survey (Wave V) in South Korea, the analysis shows that individuals with higher perceived relative income are more likely to support trade liberalization. However, social media use weakens this positive relationship by amplifying exposure to negative narratives about the distributional and labor market effects of trade and reinforcing social comparison. These findings highlight the importance of information environments in shaping trade attitudes and advance a deeper understanding of the factors that influence individual preferences over trade policy.
