Abstract

This paper critically examines the psychological underpinnings of jealousy and revenge as portrayed in William Shakespeare’s Othello. It situates this analysis within contemporary frameworks of psychology, psychiatry, and the philosophy of love. It explores how Othello, ensnared by Iago’s insidious manipulations, becomes an agent of ruin not only to himself but also to Cassio and Desdemona—figures embodying trust, loyalty, and love. By analyzing the intricate interplay between jealousy and revenge, this study elucidates how these fundamental human emotions, while adaptive in nature, can precipitate catastrophic outcomes when distorted or uncontrolled. Drawing upon interdisciplinary perspectives, this discussion integrates psychological theories, psychiatric insights, and philosophical discourse to construct a multilayered understanding of these emotional drives. Through a close reading of Othello, this paper further contends that Shakespeare’s tragedy serves as a paradigmatic case study of the destructive potential inherent in the mismanagement of jealousy and revenge within intimate relationships. In doing so, it offers critical reflections on how the cautionary lessons offered by the play may inform contemporary approaches to emotional regulation and relational ethics, underscoring the enduring relevance of Shakespeare’s insights into the human psyche.
