Abstract
This chapter considers the rise and fall of the cultural exchange between Korea and China from the 1910s and to the 2020s, with special attention to films and dramas that have or have not been translated because of socio-political reasons. Various types of translated stories, which have been welcomed at different periods in history, are discussed as the backdrop to the interaction between the two cultures and to other socio-political and historical events. Drawing on a variety of examples, this chapter shows that the translation of audiovisual media between Korean and Chinese is intertwined with socio-political ideology, particularly in the context of Korean-Chinese diplomatic relations. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Yves Gambier and Haina Jin.
