The sound in film stands in an equal relationship to the image in the context of constructing and conveying narrative information. While montage theory originally referred to the combination and editing of shots in its narrowest sense, its meaning transcends mere visual assembly when considering its connotation of "construction." With the advent of sound in cinema, auditory elements used in theories such as Eisenstein's "vertical montage" expanded beyond traditional auditory imagery to encompass a broader concept referred to as "sound montage," which includes music, dialogue, and sound effects. This study focuses on the notion that sound can independently generate a third meaning based on its various configurations in relation to the image. This paper specifically examines the relationship between two opposing characters, analyzed through the lens of "sound montage," exploring the diverse uses of sound in the film <The Two Popes>. To accurately locate the techniques employed, the analysis is grounded in Daniel Percheron's framework from Sound in Cinema and its Relationship to Image and Diegesis. While previous studies on montage have often concentrated on music when addressing auditory imagery, this study considers dialogue and sound effects as equally significant components in the transmission of narrative. The sound elements are thus categorized into three parts—music, dialogue, and sound effects—for a comprehensive analysis. This study anticipates that modern perspectives, such as sound montage, will offer advanced alternatives for future film sound production by considering the technical methods applied to new platform era, such as over-the-top (OTT) content.-
