Abstract

Sherman Alexie, the Spokane Indian writer, draws early ideological sketches for Native American economic and cultural restoration in The Summer of Black Widows and One Stick Song, collections of poems, essays, and minimalism proses. He describes desperate conditions on reservations like diabetes, poverty, alcoholic addictions, and violence, which are followed by his unlimited and pragmatic suggestions to overcome those predicaments. Cultural recovery is one thing, and economic restoration is another. To combine the two agendas together, Alexie proposes to claim the ownership of ‘Indian’ related cultural products, to provide traditional Native American ceremonies for non-Indian visitors seeking for haven, and to establish casinos on reservations. He expects his blueprints could stimulate the cultural and economic exchanges between Native people and white Americans, so that Indians will gradually be happy to modify their old-fashioned Indianness to contemporary one. To have all his promising schemes fulfilled, Alexie emphasizes Indians' receptive approaches to American capitalism, expecting they gradually customize it for Native American capitalism.
