| dc.description.abstract | This study aims to investigate how intertextuality in musical theaters is translated and what impact it may have, by analyzing multimodal interactions between verbal and non-verbal signs. Based on Hatim and Mason (1990) and Carpi (2020), intertextual references delivered through lines, lyrics, music, movement and stage props were compared between the 2015 Broadway original and 2022 Korean productions of <Something Rotten!> whose key features are parodies and citation of references from Shakespeare’s works and Broadway musicals. Analysis finds that unfamiliar intertextual references were replaced or new references were added via many verbal and non-verbal signs to retain semiotic status and intentionality which in turn can reinforce or ensure intertextuality in the TTs. Verbal or non-verbal signs were also changed to ensure coherence to contribute to passive intertextuality. The findings support the feasibility and significance of mutimodal expansion of research on intertextuality and musical translation, and therefore this study’s value as an interdisciplinary approach. | - |
