This study set out to demonstrate that video aspect ratio started to change for technological reasons, was gradually influenced by aesthetic reasons for its changes, and had effects on the audience’s perceptions. There have long been attempts at film aspect ratio in various ways, and the biggest reason behind them was to differentiate film from other media including TV. The changes to the aspect ratio from the aesthetic perspective faced failure after failure and finally achieved technological completeness during the transition from film to digital. The present study analyzed actual scenes shot in movies with various examples of aspect ratio and investigated the reasons behind changes to aspect ratio and the ways it could be perceived by the audience. The aspect ratio has been increasingly wider in recent movies compared with early movies, and the reasons were examined based on the differentiation of aspect ratio between film and TV. An approach was made to the reasons behind its changes through case study. The study also discussed whether the aspect ratio changes could be another choice in the viewpoint of direction in addition to the technological one. The findings will help directors make use of aspect ratio as another method of direction.-
