The aim of this study was to compare compulsory rural service programs for health care professionals, including pharmacists, as a way to solve the maldistribution of pharmacists in rural or underserved areas. We discovered that compulsory rural service programs were adopted not only for health workers but also for health professional students. In the case of South Korea, doctors, dentists and oriental doctors can provide their professional services to people living in rural areas for 3 years instead of conducting the mandatory military service. Due to the fact that the shortage of pharmacists in public health centers and public hospitals in rural areas is severe, government intervention, such as introducing compulsory rural service programs for pharmacists, is essential in order to solve the maldistribution of pharmacists.-
